He is a very famous person on the world histry. In addition, I think the story of "Columbus's egg" is known for everybody all over the world. The story means it is important to be a first person who start something.
It is a bit funny for me that he has been thinking America is India forever. At the age when various things have not developed, he didn't fear death and keep to adventure. If I were him, I couldn't keep to adventure. He is a brave man!
